My magazine Edit

Over the last week I have been editing a magazine cover just to get practise for creating our real magazine cover. I took a picture from the internet of Jessica Alba and edited to make sure it fits on the magazine that I want. I took initial ideas from magazines such as " Total Film" and " Empire Magazine". On the sides there were many short catch frases to engage the reader to go on reading about their favourite stars.

Empire magazine is pretty similar to what Total film has to offer in the sense that they provide a service of entertainment and news about what, where and how new films and being produced and when they are coming out.

This is a picture of my edited magazine cover with Jessica Alba on it

Poster Recreation

Above is the original poster of Due Date which is a new box office hit movie come out across America and the U.K. I took this poster as my stimulus to create a new poster. This is a new comedy that features Robert Downing Jr. and Zach Galifianakis.

Above, this poster is the one I created through Photoshop by importing the original poster and cropping the pictures out. Then adding the photo on the other page I edited the boundries of the actors that didnt show the fine lines of the original. The Sky background i selected and used that as the framing device to put the picture on it. Then the titles were added to show that I have added my own style to the poster. I zoomed closer in to find the spaces that required a lot of work around the edges to slowly erase the fine lines of the previous picture.

Titles Ideas.

Here above I spent todays lessons design a few title Ideas for our trailer, we still havent not come up with the name of our movie so we have called our work for now Title. With these experiments we can now pin point what sort of style we would want to have in our trailer. I used many different designing materials such as Outter Glow, Counter Lines, Inner Glow and Font styles to produce the perfect title. We created our title name just to show that this would be part of our main project towards the end of editing.

In the first few Titles we added different fonts to show a variety of styles one could use. Also the colour would show the feeling of the movie as it would portray the Genre of it. We have a scale of showing the genre of styles. Red and Bright colours being used mainly for comedies and Darker more harder colours to focus on the more serious aspects of trailers.
As our Genre revolves around Love and Comedy I would have to stick with a few bright colours and and a tint of red to make the focus of love more prominant. This is part of the research that goes into finding how to make the title look appealing to the audience. Not only does the shades of colour suite the way we put across the genre of the movie but also give a slight emotion to the title.
I will be loading a few more titles shortly in due course. For now these titles are the basic idea.

Shot List

This afternoon we sat down and discussed all the shots that we need to make sure we capture in our film. This task took a lot of time and planning to ensure we got the best shots for the mood of the film etc. The chosen shots are below but in no particular order.

1) Split screen of rugby and football captain practising on their own.
2) Close up of rugby ball being kicked off a tee.
3) High angle of rugby pitch.
4) Rugby tackle as the captain is practising.
5) Upward tilt of captain after we see training shots.
6) Establishing shot of the football pitch (wide angle).
7) Close up of the football being kicked off the penalty spot.
8) Close up of the footballer's feet as he uses a specific trick.
9) Upward tilt of the football captain.
10) Mid shot of the girl's friends who are encouraging her to go and speak to the football captain.
11) Low angle shot of the girl walking towards the captains. (This will be done again in split screen so that we see her talking to both of them and being flirtatious)
12) Mid shot of her kissing the rugby captain in the woods.
13) Wide angle of her walking back to her house and meeting the footballer on the way.
14) Close up of the two of them kissing. (This is the same effect as having a split screen as it shows that she is playing the two characters without them knowing, without over using the split screen.)
15) Shot reaction shot of the two guys finding out that she is cheating on them.
16) Close up of fight starting when they go after each other.
17) Close up of hands as they make up and decide to go after her instead.
18) Boys walking towards her giving her a hard time.
19) Close up of her being treated badly in the lunch hall.
20) Add a caption after all the pranks " Until they Went too Far."

The reason that we have chosen to do a lot of the same shots for both captains is because we are hoping to use a split screen method to introduce the main characters to the audience. For example as the rugby ball is kicked off the tee the football will be kicked off the penalty spot at the same time. To ensure that this works we must film both the rugby and football scenes on the same day because we need the light to be same in both. This way we don't have one side of the screen darker than the other and so on.

Casting.

Over last few weeks I have been looking for a variety of people to play the roles of the girl from California and the Young men playing the roles of the Rugby player and Footballer. I asked around in my school if anyone was willing to play such roles. Many respones were that they had no time for extra curricular activity and needed to spend time doing there work. I finally found one man to help me with the role of the Rugby player. He is the current rugby captain of Gordonstoun school and is willing to participate in our trailer, As for the footballer I will be willing to play the role. As I am a footballer it is easier for me to play the other man which removes the hassels of looking for someone to fill that role.
Robyn who I had asked and was ready to cast her into the lead role of the California girl had to back out because of many other commitments like Art and Drama coursework assignments.
This is not a major problem because we still havent started filming as yet and have just found the locations to shoot first few scene of the trailer. This would be a exciting new prospect to go in search for a new girl for our trailer. Now I would advise people to look deep into their schedule and occrdingly accept our proposal.
A new role star could prove worthwhile to the whole production of our trailer.

Pictures of us working.

Gregor Sharp and Vidur Bharatram

Here are just a couple of pictures of us working in class.
Vidur is on our blog reading over the most recent post that we did & Gregor is on YouTube researching the key elements of a film trailer to help us with our project

Story Arc

This is our synopsis of our stroy that we are going to create a trailer. In our movie there are two boys ( Vidur, Michael Wallace) who are enemys and a footballer and a rugby player respectively. Both of them hate each other but are linked in one way; They both get together with Robyn the new girl from California. She is good looking, stylish and up to no good. She does not let on to either of the boys that she is also together with their enemy. This heart renching comedy and love story starts of in Gordonstoun school.
When the two boys find out that they have been played by Robyn the two of them team up to get her back. They embarrass her in the dining hall infront of other people and many other things to make her feel bad for what she did. However while this is taking place on boy can't seem to let go but does not want to admit it to his recently aquired friend, creating lots of difficulties!
What happens next has not been decided yet but this story shall be a classic, not to miss movie.

Paramount Evaulation.

PARAMOUNT.

This is the first production company I looked at is Paramount Pictures. This is a great company as it is a major player in the movie industry. The company has created many greart movies over last decade and is continuing to create and win many awards. I am looking at Paramount pictures because they are releasing a few comic movies which could be a great shot to join up with them to produce our movies. The new upcoming movies that look hilarious are

  • Dinner with the Shmucks

  • Middle Men

My next production company that I was looking at was Universal Studios which is the biggest production company of them all. They produce many movies every year and keep making new ones. The latest of them all which are comic and love are Little Fockers and The Dilemma.

This production company would be perfect for us because maybe they could accept our movie.

Art of The Title

We have now completed the Art of the Title project which involves gathering 9 key images from my chosen trailer or movie then adding them all together to create a small story board with them.

1st Image- This signifies that there will be two couples in our movie which is easy to understand as it says so.

2nd Image- A stupid picture of Vince Vaughn playing an imaginary guitar which signifies that again there is comedy to our trailer that we want to create.

3rd Image- Two freinds hugging, shows love between two friends and then what is going to happen next during the course of the movie.

4th Image- "one little discovery" is the main focus point of our story line as the girl in our story cheats on the two boys. This caption makes the story complete.

5th Image- Vince Vaughn Spying on the girl who is cheating on his friend. This is typical of a love story.

6th Image- The Guy and the Girl kissing behind bushes which is the twist in the story. We will try to create something like this in our trailer.

7th Image- Again the two friends watching a hockey match. Shows the proximity of thier relationship.

8th Image- Picture of Jennifer Connely to show that she might be the person cheating on her partner.

9th Image- Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Connely together which shows that they are in a relationship.

Uk Tribes

In this post I will be looking at different audiences to target my movie at. There is a huge variety of people in and around our world that we can target as our perfect audience.

CHAVS?

Looking at the picture above I highly doubt that our movie would attract an audience like this. Probably there kind of movies would be more geared towards action and Comedy with a lot of rude and crude humor. The "Chavs" would not make a perfect audience to target.

Sports Junkies?

Well our movie does have a lot geared towards sports. As both the male actors that we want to have in our movie are going to be sports men playing football and rugby. So this could be good to target this particular sort of audience. But maybe not on the whole as there would be a love story aspect side to it. Who knows?

Posh People/ Rahs?

Looking at the picture of the people up above, maybe there could be a chance of them being our target audience. Posh people love sports, also they love, LOVE. Mixing both these to our movies we might get a great solution to our target audience. But again there is a problem as they might want to see a lot of Rich people living in luxurious conditions as them selves. But here isnt a harm in including them in our project?

Trendy People?

Could this be the one? Our target audience of the Trendy people would fall under the fact that this group of them would be looking at many fashion designer styles and expensive items of clothing. Our movie and trailer offers none of the things mentioned. But trendy people often do fall in love fast than any one. So maybe if we had a mix of a target audience of trendy and sports junkies maybe we could do well? Weighing up all the options we can come to a conclusion that maybe we would have to target the trendy and sporty type of people for us to succeed in our movie

Forgetting Sarah Marshall Trailer

My next trailer I picked to evaluate was "Forgetting Sarah Marshall". This movie is about a man called Peter who is in a relationship with a famous T.V star. She breaks up with him and Peter goes into a depression. He decides to take a vacation to Hawaii. When he gets there he finds out that his room is right near his Ex-girlfriends room who is now dating a famous rock singer Alvis Snow. The story then goes on how he tries to avoid her but he keeps bumping into her while at the same time he falls in love with a beautiful girl who works at the reception desk played by the beautiful Mila Kunis.

In the few opening shots the story is told through captions which dictate the story. There is no voice over apart from the actors talking about the next few scenes. These voice overs provide the story line for the trailer. Its a very colourful trailer which goes very nicely with the theme of the movie which is relaxing in Hawaii. The editing in the trailer is pretty average as the tranistion is moderate. This provides a basic story line for the audience to understand. Also there is a soundtrack in the background which keeps playing which is relaxing and funky to again show that the audience is getting involved in a holiday movie.

Most of the captions that signify the trailer pose a question to get the audience thinking about what is going to happen next. This is a great way of keep the audience guessing about the movie.
What I feel about this trailer is great is that it relates to our plans of a comic love story that involves two males over one female and how they go about solving there own problems. This trailer makes our storyline seem doable apart from the obvious facts of being in Hawaii.

We feel that we can produce a similar storyline in the confounds of our school area. This could be extremely successful.

Evaluation of our Research

Today I asked many of my peers a few easy questions about a trailer that we could be making. Most of the response was positive and were helpful in coming up with good ideas in what to create.

Q- What do you like to see in a trailer?
The answers were as such, Good voice over, Amazing music, Good actors and Actresses, cinematography, Word Of Mouth, Excitment and if its interesting. These are a few evaluations I have taken from people.

Q- What makes you want to see a movie?
Here are the answers of many, Adverts, Good reviews, Trailers, Word of Mouth and Action made all the people in my class want to watch movies.

Q- What makes a bad trailer?
Here are the answers, Cringe movie, Bad actors, Sequals, Cheesy, Giving away the plot to easily.
Many of these respones came immediatly which shows that my peers knew already what to say and had a clear image on the way it should be made.

Mood Board

Today we completed our mood board. Here we stuck pictures of different pictures that reprsesnt the styles we want to use in our trailer. And how we want to keep it while we start casting as well.

In this mood board we used magazines and other images like newspapers and printouts to produce the board.

"Going The Distance" trailer 1

The trailer above is of the newest release in 2010 called " Going the Distance" This movie has a good cast with the leading Actress Drew Barrymore and Justin Long playing the lead Male role. This romantic comedy will leave audiences laughing out loud. The trailer of Going the Distance incredibly entertaining as it reflects what the movie wants the audience to experience the funny side of the long distance relationships. The transitions between the scenes is a big boeing 747 jet going across the scene which again grabbed my attention because it made it clear to me about the distance of the relationships. The editing of the trailer was smooth and flowing to give the important and funny moments of the movie. The editing also includes a few split screens of the main characters name with a white background and the names in black. This signifies the comic aspect of the movie with a touch of romance. Also the story telling is done through a few titles that explain the story in detail in what there is to come next.

The cinematography side of the trailer is pretty simple which includes many shot reaction shots of people having conversations about there relationships. The angles that stick out are the mid range shots of the main characters sitting in the airport together hugging each other is a vital moment in the story line before the Girl leaves. There are also a few establishing shots of city's like San Fransico and New York. For the representation of this there is a split screen at one point of the trailer that shows the major land marks of these cities, for example the San Fransico Bridge and the New York Skyscrapers.

The sound added to the trailer was melodic romantic music. This gave the sense of love as it sooths the audience to be involved in the movie. At the end of the trailer we see a woman bitting into corn, the bit is enhanced to add to the comedy effect beacuse of the previous night of what happened. What we want to incorporate looking at this video is the transitions and the shot reaction shots. There is no voice over which we will be looking at to place in the video. But I liked the idea of the characters narrating the story for us. This gives the sense of the movie of what is in store for the Audience.

First Idea Of Trailer

Today in our media class, Gregor and I discussed the ideas of our new trailer. From switching ideas from Sports to Horror through to Action we decided to stick on to a Romantic Comedy/Drama genre for our trailer.
Our story goes a bit like this, One beautiful girl has a boy friend who is a rugby player in school, she secretly has an affair with a footballer player. The boys at first hate each other for they have done to her, but eventually become friends and gang up on the girl and playing pranks on her and try and make her life terrible in school. These events lead to many comic things happening around campus.
This idea is not particularly based on a movie, but we will add many trailers of different movies to highlight what we want.
