Risk Assesment

This afternoon I carried out a Risk Assesment for our filming project. Here it is below. I had to think of all people involved in the filming process, all things that will be taking place in order to get the footage, from where we would place the cameras to actors having to tackle or be tackled in rugby.

Casting.

Over last few weeks I have been looking for a variety of people to play the roles of the girl from California and the Young men playing the roles of the Rugby player and Footballer. I asked around in my school if anyone was willing to play such roles. Many respones were that they had no time for extra curricular activity and needed to spend time doing there work. I finally found one man to help me with the role of the Rugby player. He is the current rugby captain of Gordonstoun school and is willing to participate in our trailer, As for the footballer I will be willing to play the role. As I am a footballer it is easier for me to play the other man which removes the hassels of looking for someone to fill that role.
Robyn who I had asked and was ready to cast her into the lead role of the California girl had to back out because of many other commitments like Art and Drama coursework assignments.
This is not a major problem because we still havent started filming as yet and have just found the locations to shoot first few scene of the trailer. This would be a exciting new prospect to go in search for a new girl for our trailer. Now I would advise people to look deep into their schedule and occrdingly accept our proposal.
A new role star could prove worthwhile to the whole production of our trailer.

Location Shots & Planning

This afternoon we planned the locations that we would like to use in our trailer. Here are some of the pictures we took of our chosen locations.

1) This first image is one of the socialising areas in the school that the characters will be using to relax in and spend time with each other.

2) This is just another picture of a room that they could use to relax in.

3) When the girl is watching the rugby captain play it will be at this location; The 1st XV rugby pitch.

4) Again this is where she will be watching the football captain play football; The 1st XI football pitch.

5) This is the house of which the rugby captain is living in on campus. It is surrounded by trees which allows the girl to be with him with a certain amount of secrecy. She blames the fact that they only seem to kiss in the woods on her being shy.

6) This is the woods on the other side of the house that if we see the characters going anywhere else on campus, apart from the sports centre, from the rugby captains house then they will use this path.

7) Again just another shot of the path just to show it in a different light and show just how hidden they will be when they are together, helping to hide it from her boyfriend, the football captain.

Story Roughly Illustrated

This picture is of the first scene of the story where the new girl is with her friends and they are encouraging her to go and speak to the football captain.

The second picture is just simply to illustrate that the chat pulled off as they are happily together and things seem to be going great! Everyone is happy.

Everything was going so well until she has an encounter with the rugby captain and things start to get cosy.

She will only kiss the rugby captain in discreet places, which he doesn't understand, but he goes a long with it because he starts to like her.

The boys find out that the girl is playing both of them but immediately want to fight as opposed to being angry at the girl.

After fighting the boys calm down and realise that they didn't know that she was playing both of them and then decide to team up and turn on the girl to get her back!

Pictures of us working.

Gregor Sharp and Vidur Bharatram

Here are just a couple of pictures of us working in class.
Vidur is on our blog reading over the most recent post that we did & Gregor is on YouTube researching the key elements of a film trailer to help us with our project

Story Arc

This is our synopsis of our stroy that we are going to create a trailer. In our movie there are two boys ( Vidur, Michael Wallace) who are enemys and a footballer and a rugby player respectively. Both of them hate each other but are linked in one way; They both get together with Robyn the new girl from California. She is good looking, stylish and up to no good. She does not let on to either of the boys that she is also together with their enemy. This heart renching comedy and love story starts of in Gordonstoun school.
When the two boys find out that they have been played by Robyn the two of them team up to get her back. They embarrass her in the dining hall infront of other people and many other things to make her feel bad for what she did. However while this is taking place on boy can't seem to let go but does not want to admit it to his recently aquired friend, creating lots of difficulties!
What happens next has not been decided yet but this story shall be a classic, not to miss movie.

Key Trailer Elements

After watching trailers and analysing what makes them so good I have managed to get a good idea of what is necessary for our trailer to succeed.

In an action film it is the stunts and other explosions etc that people see in the trailer that makes them go and see the end product. In a thriller it can be the gripping story that may relate to people's personal experiences etc that encourages them to go and watch them. Comedies however have many things that encourage people to watch. This can range from a cast the people know will bring natural comedy to the film therefore making it funny. Also some simple stupidity and clumsy behaviour always leads to people laughing no matter what their personal taste is. A good example of what I think a successful trailer is 'The Dilemma' posted below.

1:17 min's in to the trailer is an example of what I was talking about when I said stupidity and clumsy behaviour to get some laughs. Some more of this behaviour is showing in the next trailer at 0:43 mins when someone sits on a broken chair and breaks it and also at 1:22 when he punches a woman harder than expected when testing the strength of her stomach muscles!

Personally I also think that light hearted controversial behaviour is more often than not successful at making people crack up! 1:13 mins in to 'Keeping the Faith' trailer is an example of this when a priest punches someone in public while in his religious clothing! This however is not taken seriously because it is a comedy and is very obviously not meant to offend anyone.

Paramount Evaulation.

PARAMOUNT.

This is the first production company I looked at is Paramount Pictures. This is a great company as it is a major player in the movie industry. The company has created many greart movies over last decade and is continuing to create and win many awards. I am looking at Paramount pictures because they are releasing a few comic movies which could be a great shot to join up with them to produce our movies. The new upcoming movies that look hilarious are

  • Dinner with the Shmucks

  • Middle Men

My next production company that I was looking at was Universal Studios which is the biggest production company of them all. They produce many movies every year and keep making new ones. The latest of them all which are comic and love are Little Fockers and The Dilemma.

This production company would be perfect for us because maybe they could accept our movie.

Production Company Research

This afternoon in class I researched the companies that were involved with the films that were the inspiration for the choice of genre, storyline etc in our project.

Firstly there is 'Imagine Entertainment'.

An American company that has previously been involved in some successful and well known films such as 8 Mile (2002), American Gangster (2007), Robin Hood (2010) and many more.

However while looking at the films there some but not many that I could see that were in our chosen genre. The comedies that I saw they had been involved with include Undercover Brother (2002), How The Grinch Stole Christmass (2000) and the Nutty Proffessor II (2000).

The next production company that I looked at was Spyglass Entertainment.
Again this is an American company and some films that people may know of that has been associated with include Wanted (2008), Bruce Almighty (2003), Invictus (2009) and more recently Get Him To The Greek (2010).

Finally I looked in to Universal Studios. This is a very well known institution and the particular film that made me mention this company is 'The Break Up': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15hw8D9w4s8&feature=relatedv=15hw8D9w4s8&feature=relatedube.com/watch?v=15hw8D9w4s8&feature=related
The story is very much on the same lines as our plot. The only difference is that when they break up it is the girl that tries to make the man feel bad for not having her any more. Similarly the men become good friends as opposed to enemies which is what is intended.

Personally after looking in to production companies, the one that stuck out the most to me as one that would be promising for distributing our film is Spyglass. This is due to the fact that the films that they have been involved with in the last few years have often been comedies. This appealed to me because there would be a confident approach on how to distribute our product as it has been many times before by this company. For example with Keeping The Faith in the year 2000.

Art of The Title

We have now completed the Art of the Title project which involves gathering 9 key images from my chosen trailer or movie then adding them all together to create a small story board with them.

1st Image- This signifies that there will be two couples in our movie which is easy to understand as it says so.

2nd Image- A stupid picture of Vince Vaughn playing an imaginary guitar which signifies that again there is comedy to our trailer that we want to create.

3rd Image- Two freinds hugging, shows love between two friends and then what is going to happen next during the course of the movie.

4th Image- "one little discovery" is the main focus point of our story line as the girl in our story cheats on the two boys. This caption makes the story complete.

5th Image- Vince Vaughn Spying on the girl who is cheating on his friend. This is typical of a love story.

6th Image- The Guy and the Girl kissing behind bushes which is the twist in the story. We will try to create something like this in our trailer.

7th Image- Again the two friends watching a hockey match. Shows the proximity of thier relationship.

8th Image- Picture of Jennifer Connely to show that she might be the person cheating on her partner.

9th Image- Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Connely together which shows that they are in a relationship.

Uk Tribes

In this post I will be looking at different audiences to target my movie at. There is a huge variety of people in and around our world that we can target as our perfect audience.

CHAVS?

Looking at the picture above I highly doubt that our movie would attract an audience like this. Probably there kind of movies would be more geared towards action and Comedy with a lot of rude and crude humor. The "Chavs" would not make a perfect audience to target.

Sports Junkies?

Well our movie does have a lot geared towards sports. As both the male actors that we want to have in our movie are going to be sports men playing football and rugby. So this could be good to target this particular sort of audience. But maybe not on the whole as there would be a love story aspect side to it. Who knows?

Posh People/ Rahs?

Looking at the picture of the people up above, maybe there could be a chance of them being our target audience. Posh people love sports, also they love, LOVE. Mixing both these to our movies we might get a great solution to our target audience. But again there is a problem as they might want to see a lot of Rich people living in luxurious conditions as them selves. But here isnt a harm in including them in our project?

Trendy People?

Could this be the one? Our target audience of the Trendy people would fall under the fact that this group of them would be looking at many fashion designer styles and expensive items of clothing. Our movie and trailer offers none of the things mentioned. But trendy people often do fall in love fast than any one. So maybe if we had a mix of a target audience of trendy and sports junkies maybe we could do well? Weighing up all the options we can come to a conclusion that maybe we would have to target the trendy and sporty type of people for us to succeed in our movie

UK Tribes & Research

This evening I visited the UK Tribes website: http://uktribes.com/ and the video above is the result that I came out with. After doing so I asked some friends to do the same and to do the same questionnaire as me: http://www.findyourtribe.co.uk/ and some of their results are below!

http://uktribes.com/?p=tribe&id=16 = Chav
http://uktribes.com/?p=tribe&id=7 = Indie Scenesters

This website is something of an eye opener for what things we should include in our video to make the target audience become interested in it. Not only this but it shows what type of people we are similar to, widening our audience!
After being on this website I went on to youtube to do some more research of some interviews that Channel 4 did with people that are the typical example of the group they are associated with. For example here is a video of a snob.

While doing this research of other groups of people it allowed me to see that it is going to be very difficult to have a lot of different groups of people attracted to the same thing. For example in the film above the snob tells the person in the interview that they think that chavs drink and smoke too much and if they live in a council flat then it clearly identifies them. Therefore if we were t0 involve smoking and drinking in our film then there would be a part of the audience that we would miss out on because they don't want to watch something like that as they feel they are better than the people that do these things in their free time.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall Trailer

My next trailer I picked to evaluate was "Forgetting Sarah Marshall". This movie is about a man called Peter who is in a relationship with a famous T.V star. She breaks up with him and Peter goes into a depression. He decides to take a vacation to Hawaii. When he gets there he finds out that his room is right near his Ex-girlfriends room who is now dating a famous rock singer Alvis Snow. The story then goes on how he tries to avoid her but he keeps bumping into her while at the same time he falls in love with a beautiful girl who works at the reception desk played by the beautiful Mila Kunis.

In the few opening shots the story is told through captions which dictate the story. There is no voice over apart from the actors talking about the next few scenes. These voice overs provide the story line for the trailer. Its a very colourful trailer which goes very nicely with the theme of the movie which is relaxing in Hawaii. The editing in the trailer is pretty average as the tranistion is moderate. This provides a basic story line for the audience to understand. Also there is a soundtrack in the background which keeps playing which is relaxing and funky to again show that the audience is getting involved in a holiday movie.

Most of the captions that signify the trailer pose a question to get the audience thinking about what is going to happen next. This is a great way of keep the audience guessing about the movie.
What I feel about this trailer is great is that it relates to our plans of a comic love story that involves two males over one female and how they go about solving there own problems. This trailer makes our storyline seem doable apart from the obvious facts of being in Hawaii.

We feel that we can produce a similar storyline in the confounds of our school area. This could be extremely successful.
