1st Edit of Trailer

This is our first edit of the video that we have been making.

There might be a few problems that we might encounter during the upload but should be sorted out. Also the video is not fully finished and requires a few more videos to be added on to it which will then be completed with the appropriate captions.

Tuesday 7 December 2010

Approaching the Deadline

Today Vidur and I did a lot of editing. We added captions in to the footage that we have and now that we have some more captions etc it has allowed us some more material to play with transitions and so on which has turned out rather well. We did however find something that we had difficulty with and needed to figure out. This was to make the background on premiere elements white as opposed to the standard black.

We didn't actually discover how to do this, however, we did find an alternative. This problem occured when we were bringing captions from photoshop over to premiere elements. What we did as opposed to just cropping around the word, which we had done before, we cropped the whole photoshop page and then edited the size of the font to as large as we needed to create the same effect as before just with a white background.

With the deadline approaching, we need to concentrate on getting all of our final footage filmed and put on to premiere elements so that we can edit a final draft.

Today (Thursday 9th of December) is really the last day that we have a chance to film this term before we break up for the holidays. I have written up a shot list that we need to stick by this afternoon and then we will add that to the footage we already have before we go home for the Christmas holidays where we will not be able to do any filming due to the school being closed and all actors living in different countries.

Wednesday 1 December 2010

Filming

This morning we filmed some footage in the 6th form centre. We are now uploading the footage on to the computers and then on to premier elements. Although the footage is good I am unsure about some of the lighting and because there were so many people around the character we will have to analyse it and make sure that there is nothing that makes it look unrealistic. This is possible and we may have to reshoot the footage if there are any problems, but so far we are reasonably happy with what we have captured today.

Also we have been revisiting our original shot list and we have noticed that some things have changed as the progress goes on. We have decided to differ from the original decisions due to the change in weather conditions and time available before the deadline.

Today's Filming

This evening we are hoping to do some filming at supper where we see the female character on the end of the anger of the other two male characters for cheating on them. The aim of the footage is nothing cynical but just to capture footage of the girl having a hard time and people not helping but more hindering the situation.
The reason we have chosen to do the filming in this public area is because there will be more realistic reactions in the kind of environment that everyone is familiar with. Also if there is a larger audience watching the filming take place the actor might give a more realistic embarrassed expression when something happens to her.

Tomorrow afternoon we are hoping to do the shots of the rugby ball being kicked and the same with the football as we are planning to do a split screen and use symmetry apart from the objects being kicked.

Weather Warning!

This week we have been watching the weather to ensure that we get our footage filmed before the snow falls because we are aware that if we have the majority of shots with damp conditions and the rest with a covering of snow then there will be a continuity issue. Today while discussing this issue there was a very heavy shower of hailstones. This means that we need to film the remaining footage today and tomorrow before the temperature causes it to snow.

Update On Filming

For the last week we have started filming our trailer video's that we will be using. To kickstart the project we first met up in our lunch hall with our designated actors and discussed our locations, type of shots and also what costume we would be looking to wear for these shots. At first we had a few shots around one of the main Boarding houses called Bruce. Then making our way through the woods we got a few more to make the scene fit. Also we got a couple near the main building of our school.

During my editing seasions I realized that we required many more shots that need to to taken before winter starts. Also we decided as a group that Warner Brothers would be perfect to use in our trailer as the production company.

The main theme song for our trailer that I have decided to use is Im a Passanger by Iggy Pop. This song suits our genre of love and treachary. But also suits the builds up of our videos that we are editing.

Production Company

This is the production company label that we have chosen to use in our film. Many trailers have this at the begining however we have chosen not to do this but as an alternative set it in to the trailer. Below is an example of a trailer that has the same thing. The clips is inserted around 25 or 26 seconds in to the trailer.

My magazine Edit

Over the last week I have been editing a magazine cover just to get practise for creating our real magazine cover. I took a picture from the internet of Jessica Alba and edited to make sure it fits on the magazine that I want. I took initial ideas from magazines such as " Total Film" and " Empire Magazine". On the sides there were many short catch frases to engage the reader to go on reading about their favourite stars.

Empire magazine is pretty similar to what Total film has to offer in the sense that they provide a service of entertainment and news about what, where and how new films and being produced and when they are coming out.

This is a picture of my edited magazine cover with Jessica Alba on it

Importance of Film Posters for Promotion

Ironically in the early days of movie making actors were not usually depicted on the film posters. The title of the film and the producer and directors names were usually the attraction until Hollywood realized that it was the actors who brought in the viewers. It was at that time that the stars of movies were then plastered on each poster giving life to a new era in the film industry.

Movie posters created before the eighties were mainly returned to the studios or poster sources and destroyed when the archives became full or the film's run had ended. Many early film posters made for hit movies such as Casablanca, King Kong, Frankenstein and The Wizard of Oz were destroyed as a result of natural disasters that occurred during World War II. As people became more aware of their value theatre owners began to ignore return policies and those film posters that were spared are widely sought today by collectors and dealers.

To find out how influential a film poster was in the promotion of a film I asked people in my media class what they thought and why. The general concensus on the topic is that they are actually very important. If you go to the cinema regularly then you will see trailers for new releases often but if you are not a regular cinema goer then a film poster is what makes you go online to watch the trailer, which then makes you go to the cinema. So as you can see there is a great need for a film poster even with all of today's technology. There are obviously other ways that people find out about new films but this proves that posters are still very influential.

How is Star Image Used

Today I have looked at how important the image of the star is on a magazine cover in the means of promoting a film. This means, how influential is a picture of a big film star on the front of a magazine such as 'Total Film' when promoting a film. For example below you can see magazine covers, one with Megan Fox and one with Chris Pine.

Personally, I would say that Megan Fox is more widely known than Chris Pine. This means when people see her on the cover of a magazine they will be interested in what she has been involed in; less so to do with Chris Pine. However, this does not mean that they cannot be interested in a magazine with a relatively low key star on the front. People are attracted to these things in different ways. For example if a guy sees a good looking girl on a cover and he doesn't know her name, it wont stop him from being interested in the magazine.

Magazines tend to use either good looking people or very well known people on their covers. This is because if there is an actor that is relatively new to the screens and they are good looking then they can be placed on the front of the magazine as a 'New Talent' article promotion. If they are well known then people will see them on the cover and be interested in what their latest project is, regardless of how kind they are to the eye.

When we do our front cover I think that the most important thing that we need to focus on is getting the person to have the right facial expression to give across the mood that the film is trying to deliver. For example if the person is smiling but the film is a horror then the mood that you are delivering to your audience doesn't match the intentions of the film.

Here are 2 covers of Total Film magazine that display just how important setting the mood is.

This cover for inception is obviously a dark and serious film. It is helped by the effect on the title as it is complex looking and with the different shading on the title it adds to the depth of it. Using an actor that has previously done dark complicated projects adds to the mystery and interest.

This cover promoting 'Valkerie' shows a very well known actor with a very well known military suit, giving the audience an idea of what its about. Also it comes across as a very smart, crisp military film. This is helped by the title font being simple and clear.

Magazine Cover Analysis

Today I had a look at magazine covers. I looked at more than just one or two and got a good feel of them. Below is a cover that I analysed. It is of 'Total Film' which is a very well known and trusted media opinion.

Poster Recreation

Above is the original poster of Due Date which is a new box office hit movie come out across America and the U.K. I took this poster as my stimulus to create a new poster. This is a new comedy that features Robert Downing Jr. and Zach Galifianakis.

Above, this poster is the one I created through Photoshop by importing the original poster and cropping the pictures out. Then adding the photo on the other page I edited the boundries of the actors that didnt show the fine lines of the original. The Sky background i selected and used that as the framing device to put the picture on it. Then the titles were added to show that I have added my own style to the poster. I zoomed closer in to find the spaces that required a lot of work around the edges to slowly erase the fine lines of the previous picture.

Titles Ideas.

Here above I spent todays lessons design a few title Ideas for our trailer, we still havent not come up with the name of our movie so we have called our work for now Title. With these experiments we can now pin point what sort of style we would want to have in our trailer. I used many different designing materials such as Outter Glow, Counter Lines, Inner Glow and Font styles to produce the perfect title. We created our title name just to show that this would be part of our main project towards the end of editing.

In the first few Titles we added different fonts to show a variety of styles one could use. Also the colour would show the feeling of the movie as it would portray the Genre of it. We have a scale of showing the genre of styles. Red and Bright colours being used mainly for comedies and Darker more harder colours to focus on the more serious aspects of trailers.
As our Genre revolves around Love and Comedy I would have to stick with a few bright colours and and a tint of red to make the focus of love more prominant. This is part of the research that goes into finding how to make the title look appealing to the audience. Not only does the shades of colour suite the way we put across the genre of the movie but also give a slight emotion to the title.
I will be loading a few more titles shortly in due course. For now these titles are the basic idea.

Conventions of a Film Poster

Alongside producing a front cover for a film magazine, another task that we have been set is to produce a film poster. Before actually starting this task I decided to research the codes and conventions of a film poster and this research is below.

*A eye catching title that can attract audiences attention, the choice of colours usually means it stands out from the background

* An intriguing photograph/picture well constructed into the composition of the poster that will attract audiences to the film

* Using the main characters (especially if they are well known) to attract the audiences attention and then can relate to other films they may have liked the actor in.

While making our film poster we have the disadvantage of not having well known actors' names to put on the poster to attract an audience, however we are able to fully fulfil the other points that I have mentioned.

Over the last century the film posters have developed over time thanks to new technology allowing different effects to be applied on them. Below are two examples of film posters, one from 1926 and another from 2004.

(Metropolis - 1926)

(Clash of the Titans 2010)

As you can see in the two images above the more recent poster has much more technical elements to it. For example there are the visual effects of the snake like creature on his arm and the debris in the air. Also the air has been done on a green screen to allow them to get the colour of sky that they wanted. Again this is a technique that we will be unable to replicate but there are posters that are just as successful yet the techniques are more doable.

This for example:

(The Italian Job - 2003)

Film Marketing Research

While looking at the promotional techniques that are used to spread the word of a new release, I chose to look at 'The Dilemma' because it is of the same genre as our project. I searched for an example of something that would tease the audience in to watching the trailer. This is the teaser that I found.

It is simple, doesn't give away much apart from when it's released and who is in it.
For this simple design to work the actors that are involved have to be well known for people to want to watch the trailer. For example if I made an exact copy of the poster, but changed the actors' names to Gregor Sharp and Vidur Bharatram then people would see that and not pay much attention to it because they don't trust the names enough to deliver the comedy that they want. Due to their success in that area of film in previous films people are drawn in and will go online and watch the trailer.

The colours in the poster make you take in all the necessary information. With the white background little information, it is difficult to miss anything on the poster. When you see the name you are already trying to think about what the dilemma could be to give the film that title and by having the release dates in a different colour the information is taken in.

Shot List

This afternoon we sat down and discussed all the shots that we need to make sure we capture in our film. This task took a lot of time and planning to ensure we got the best shots for the mood of the film etc. The chosen shots are below but in no particular order.

1) Split screen of rugby and football captain practising on their own.
2) Close up of rugby ball being kicked off a tee.
3) High angle of rugby pitch.
4) Rugby tackle as the captain is practising.
5) Upward tilt of captain after we see training shots.
6) Establishing shot of the football pitch (wide angle).
7) Close up of the football being kicked off the penalty spot.
8) Close up of the footballer's feet as he uses a specific trick.
9) Upward tilt of the football captain.
10) Mid shot of the girl's friends who are encouraging her to go and speak to the football captain.
11) Low angle shot of the girl walking towards the captains. (This will be done again in split screen so that we see her talking to both of them and being flirtatious)
12) Mid shot of her kissing the rugby captain in the woods.
13) Wide angle of her walking back to her house and meeting the footballer on the way.
14) Close up of the two of them kissing. (This is the same effect as having a split screen as it shows that she is playing the two characters without them knowing, without over using the split screen.)
15) Shot reaction shot of the two guys finding out that she is cheating on them.
16) Close up of fight starting when they go after each other.
17) Close up of hands as they make up and decide to go after her instead.
18) Boys walking towards her giving her a hard time.
19) Close up of her being treated badly in the lunch hall.
20) Add a caption after all the pranks " Until they Went too Far."

The reason that we have chosen to do a lot of the same shots for both captains is because we are hoping to use a split screen method to introduce the main characters to the audience. For example as the rugby ball is kicked off the tee the football will be kicked off the penalty spot at the same time. To ensure that this works we must film both the rugby and football scenes on the same day because we need the light to be same in both. This way we don't have one side of the screen darker than the other and so on.

Risk Assesment

This afternoon I carried out a Risk Assesment for our filming project. Here it is below. I had to think of all people involved in the filming process, all things that will be taking place in order to get the footage, from where we would place the cameras to actors having to tackle or be tackled in rugby.

Casting.

Over last few weeks I have been looking for a variety of people to play the roles of the girl from California and the Young men playing the roles of the Rugby player and Footballer. I asked around in my school if anyone was willing to play such roles. Many respones were that they had no time for extra curricular activity and needed to spend time doing there work. I finally found one man to help me with the role of the Rugby player. He is the current rugby captain of Gordonstoun school and is willing to participate in our trailer, As for the footballer I will be willing to play the role. As I am a footballer it is easier for me to play the other man which removes the hassels of looking for someone to fill that role.
Robyn who I had asked and was ready to cast her into the lead role of the California girl had to back out because of many other commitments like Art and Drama coursework assignments.
This is not a major problem because we still havent started filming as yet and have just found the locations to shoot first few scene of the trailer. This would be a exciting new prospect to go in search for a new girl for our trailer. Now I would advise people to look deep into their schedule and occrdingly accept our proposal.
A new role star could prove worthwhile to the whole production of our trailer.

Location Shots & Planning

This afternoon we planned the locations that we would like to use in our trailer. Here are some of the pictures we took of our chosen locations.

1) This first image is one of the socialising areas in the school that the characters will be using to relax in and spend time with each other.

2) This is just another picture of a room that they could use to relax in.

3) When the girl is watching the rugby captain play it will be at this location; The 1st XV rugby pitch.

4) Again this is where she will be watching the football captain play football; The 1st XI football pitch.

5) This is the house of which the rugby captain is living in on campus. It is surrounded by trees which allows the girl to be with him with a certain amount of secrecy. She blames the fact that they only seem to kiss in the woods on her being shy.

6) This is the woods on the other side of the house that if we see the characters going anywhere else on campus, apart from the sports centre, from the rugby captains house then they will use this path.

7) Again just another shot of the path just to show it in a different light and show just how hidden they will be when they are together, helping to hide it from her boyfriend, the football captain.

Story Roughly Illustrated

This picture is of the first scene of the story where the new girl is with her friends and they are encouraging her to go and speak to the football captain.

The second picture is just simply to illustrate that the chat pulled off as they are happily together and things seem to be going great! Everyone is happy.

Everything was going so well until she has an encounter with the rugby captain and things start to get cosy.

She will only kiss the rugby captain in discreet places, which he doesn't understand, but he goes a long with it because he starts to like her.

The boys find out that the girl is playing both of them but immediately want to fight as opposed to being angry at the girl.

After fighting the boys calm down and realise that they didn't know that she was playing both of them and then decide to team up and turn on the girl to get her back!

Pictures of us working.

Gregor Sharp and Vidur Bharatram

Here are just a couple of pictures of us working in class.
Vidur is on our blog reading over the most recent post that we did & Gregor is on YouTube researching the key elements of a film trailer to help us with our project

Story Arc

This is our synopsis of our stroy that we are going to create a trailer. In our movie there are two boys ( Vidur, Michael Wallace) who are enemys and a footballer and a rugby player respectively. Both of them hate each other but are linked in one way; They both get together with Robyn the new girl from California. She is good looking, stylish and up to no good. She does not let on to either of the boys that she is also together with their enemy. This heart renching comedy and love story starts of in Gordonstoun school.
When the two boys find out that they have been played by Robyn the two of them team up to get her back. They embarrass her in the dining hall infront of other people and many other things to make her feel bad for what she did. However while this is taking place on boy can't seem to let go but does not want to admit it to his recently aquired friend, creating lots of difficulties!
What happens next has not been decided yet but this story shall be a classic, not to miss movie.

Key Trailer Elements

After watching trailers and analysing what makes them so good I have managed to get a good idea of what is necessary for our trailer to succeed.

In an action film it is the stunts and other explosions etc that people see in the trailer that makes them go and see the end product. In a thriller it can be the gripping story that may relate to people's personal experiences etc that encourages them to go and watch them. Comedies however have many things that encourage people to watch. This can range from a cast the people know will bring natural comedy to the film therefore making it funny. Also some simple stupidity and clumsy behaviour always leads to people laughing no matter what their personal taste is. A good example of what I think a successful trailer is 'The Dilemma' posted below.

1:17 min's in to the trailer is an example of what I was talking about when I said stupidity and clumsy behaviour to get some laughs. Some more of this behaviour is showing in the next trailer at 0:43 mins when someone sits on a broken chair and breaks it and also at 1:22 when he punches a woman harder than expected when testing the strength of her stomach muscles!

Personally I also think that light hearted controversial behaviour is more often than not successful at making people crack up! 1:13 mins in to 'Keeping the Faith' trailer is an example of this when a priest punches someone in public while in his religious clothing! This however is not taken seriously because it is a comedy and is very obviously not meant to offend anyone.

Paramount Evaulation.

PARAMOUNT.

This is the first production company I looked at is Paramount Pictures. This is a great company as it is a major player in the movie industry. The company has created many greart movies over last decade and is continuing to create and win many awards. I am looking at Paramount pictures because they are releasing a few comic movies which could be a great shot to join up with them to produce our movies. The new upcoming movies that look hilarious are

  • Dinner with the Shmucks

  • Middle Men

My next production company that I was looking at was Universal Studios which is the biggest production company of them all. They produce many movies every year and keep making new ones. The latest of them all which are comic and love are Little Fockers and The Dilemma.

This production company would be perfect for us because maybe they could accept our movie.

Production Company Research

This afternoon in class I researched the companies that were involved with the films that were the inspiration for the choice of genre, storyline etc in our project.

Firstly there is 'Imagine Entertainment'.

An American company that has previously been involved in some successful and well known films such as 8 Mile (2002), American Gangster (2007), Robin Hood (2010) and many more.

However while looking at the films there some but not many that I could see that were in our chosen genre. The comedies that I saw they had been involved with include Undercover Brother (2002), How The Grinch Stole Christmass (2000) and the Nutty Proffessor II (2000).

The next production company that I looked at was Spyglass Entertainment.
Again this is an American company and some films that people may know of that has been associated with include Wanted (2008), Bruce Almighty (2003), Invictus (2009) and more recently Get Him To The Greek (2010).

Finally I looked in to Universal Studios. This is a very well known institution and the particular film that made me mention this company is 'The Break Up': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15hw8D9w4s8&feature=relatedv=15hw8D9w4s8&feature=relatedube.com/watch?v=15hw8D9w4s8&feature=related
The story is very much on the same lines as our plot. The only difference is that when they break up it is the girl that tries to make the man feel bad for not having her any more. Similarly the men become good friends as opposed to enemies which is what is intended.

Personally after looking in to production companies, the one that stuck out the most to me as one that would be promising for distributing our film is Spyglass. This is due to the fact that the films that they have been involved with in the last few years have often been comedies. This appealed to me because there would be a confident approach on how to distribute our product as it has been many times before by this company. For example with Keeping The Faith in the year 2000.

Art of The Title

We have now completed the Art of the Title project which involves gathering 9 key images from my chosen trailer or movie then adding them all together to create a small story board with them.

1st Image- This signifies that there will be two couples in our movie which is easy to understand as it says so.

2nd Image- A stupid picture of Vince Vaughn playing an imaginary guitar which signifies that again there is comedy to our trailer that we want to create.

3rd Image- Two freinds hugging, shows love between two friends and then what is going to happen next during the course of the movie.

4th Image- "one little discovery" is the main focus point of our story line as the girl in our story cheats on the two boys. This caption makes the story complete.

5th Image- Vince Vaughn Spying on the girl who is cheating on his friend. This is typical of a love story.

6th Image- The Guy and the Girl kissing behind bushes which is the twist in the story. We will try to create something like this in our trailer.

7th Image- Again the two friends watching a hockey match. Shows the proximity of thier relationship.

8th Image- Picture of Jennifer Connely to show that she might be the person cheating on her partner.

9th Image- Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Connely together which shows that they are in a relationship.

Uk Tribes

In this post I will be looking at different audiences to target my movie at. There is a huge variety of people in and around our world that we can target as our perfect audience.

CHAVS?

Looking at the picture above I highly doubt that our movie would attract an audience like this. Probably there kind of movies would be more geared towards action and Comedy with a lot of rude and crude humor. The "Chavs" would not make a perfect audience to target.

Sports Junkies?

Well our movie does have a lot geared towards sports. As both the male actors that we want to have in our movie are going to be sports men playing football and rugby. So this could be good to target this particular sort of audience. But maybe not on the whole as there would be a love story aspect side to it. Who knows?

Posh People/ Rahs?

Looking at the picture of the people up above, maybe there could be a chance of them being our target audience. Posh people love sports, also they love, LOVE. Mixing both these to our movies we might get a great solution to our target audience. But again there is a problem as they might want to see a lot of Rich people living in luxurious conditions as them selves. But here isnt a harm in including them in our project?

Trendy People?

Could this be the one? Our target audience of the Trendy people would fall under the fact that this group of them would be looking at many fashion designer styles and expensive items of clothing. Our movie and trailer offers none of the things mentioned. But trendy people often do fall in love fast than any one. So maybe if we had a mix of a target audience of trendy and sports junkies maybe we could do well? Weighing up all the options we can come to a conclusion that maybe we would have to target the trendy and sporty type of people for us to succeed in our movie

UK Tribes & Research

This evening I visited the UK Tribes website: http://uktribes.com/ and the video above is the result that I came out with. After doing so I asked some friends to do the same and to do the same questionnaire as me: http://www.findyourtribe.co.uk/ and some of their results are below!

http://uktribes.com/?p=tribe&id=16 = Chav
http://uktribes.com/?p=tribe&id=7 = Indie Scenesters

This website is something of an eye opener for what things we should include in our video to make the target audience become interested in it. Not only this but it shows what type of people we are similar to, widening our audience!
After being on this website I went on to youtube to do some more research of some interviews that Channel 4 did with people that are the typical example of the group they are associated with. For example here is a video of a snob.

While doing this research of other groups of people it allowed me to see that it is going to be very difficult to have a lot of different groups of people attracted to the same thing. For example in the film above the snob tells the person in the interview that they think that chavs drink and smoke too much and if they live in a council flat then it clearly identifies them. Therefore if we were t0 involve smoking and drinking in our film then there would be a part of the audience that we would miss out on because they don't want to watch something like that as they feel they are better than the people that do these things in their free time.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall Trailer

My next trailer I picked to evaluate was "Forgetting Sarah Marshall". This movie is about a man called Peter who is in a relationship with a famous T.V star. She breaks up with him and Peter goes into a depression. He decides to take a vacation to Hawaii. When he gets there he finds out that his room is right near his Ex-girlfriends room who is now dating a famous rock singer Alvis Snow. The story then goes on how he tries to avoid her but he keeps bumping into her while at the same time he falls in love with a beautiful girl who works at the reception desk played by the beautiful Mila Kunis.

In the few opening shots the story is told through captions which dictate the story. There is no voice over apart from the actors talking about the next few scenes. These voice overs provide the story line for the trailer. Its a very colourful trailer which goes very nicely with the theme of the movie which is relaxing in Hawaii. The editing in the trailer is pretty average as the tranistion is moderate. This provides a basic story line for the audience to understand. Also there is a soundtrack in the background which keeps playing which is relaxing and funky to again show that the audience is getting involved in a holiday movie.

Most of the captions that signify the trailer pose a question to get the audience thinking about what is going to happen next. This is a great way of keep the audience guessing about the movie.
What I feel about this trailer is great is that it relates to our plans of a comic love story that involves two males over one female and how they go about solving there own problems. This trailer makes our storyline seem doable apart from the obvious facts of being in Hawaii.

We feel that we can produce a similar storyline in the confounds of our school area. This could be extremely successful.

Evaluation of our Research

Today I asked many of my peers a few easy questions about a trailer that we could be making. Most of the response was positive and were helpful in coming up with good ideas in what to create.

Q- What do you like to see in a trailer?
The answers were as such, Good voice over, Amazing music, Good actors and Actresses, cinematography, Word Of Mouth, Excitment and if its interesting. These are a few evaluations I have taken from people.

Q- What makes you want to see a movie?
Here are the answers of many, Adverts, Good reviews, Trailers, Word of Mouth and Action made all the people in my class want to watch movies.

Q- What makes a bad trailer?
Here are the answers, Cringe movie, Bad actors, Sequals, Cheesy, Giving away the plot to easily.
Many of these respones came immediatly which shows that my peers knew already what to say and had a clear image on the way it should be made.

Mood Board

Today we completed our mood board. Here we stuck pictures of different pictures that reprsesnt the styles we want to use in our trailer. And how we want to keep it while we start casting as well.

In this mood board we used magazines and other images like newspapers and printouts to produce the board.

The next trailer that I am going to discuss is Keeping the Faith. This film was made in the year of 2000 and it stars Ben Stiller, Edward Norton and Jenna Elfman as the 3 main characters.

A basic explination of what happens in the trailer is 2 best friends meet up with their childhood best friend. The guy that wasn't told that she was coming to visit them was jealous that he wasn't the one the she had chosen to call to say she was coming. We could see this by the shot not moving on to something else as fast as it does throughout the rest of the trailer, creating an awkward silence. There is a difference in story from this one and our film idea. This is that in our story there is 1 girl that is playing 2 guys at the same time where as in the trailer above there is 1 girl that 2 best friends are interested in but she chooses 1 of them. She tells one of the characters that she is in love with the other one 2:09 mins in to the trailer and you can see that he does not exactly react well to this 2:13 mins in when he punches his friend that she has fallen for.

Although after watching this trailer you have a very good idea of things that happen, it still makes you want to go and see the film to see how they got to that finishing point, i.e. events that happen along the way, and to see how it ends as there could be a twist in the story that isn't given away in the trailer.

Finally one of the things that I have discovered when researching the films success etc I found that people were unhappy about the cast. For example in the comment area on youtube for the trailer there are people asking why someone would choose those particular actors for the roles. This made me realise how important it is for us to cast our trailer with people that can really play the roles better than anyone else we could use. If something like having the wrong people playing the parts can be such a big influence on the trailer alone then the chances are there will be less people going to see the film.

The trailer above is for the film Twilight Eclipse which was released in 2010. The reason I have chosen to write about this particular trailer is because the story line that we are trying to deliver is very similar.

The basic story of this traileruis a a love complication and as the girl is in love with 2 guys and she dosen't know what to do because of other factors that change the choices she can make. In our trailer we are hoping to have a girl that is essentially interested in 2 guys but she doesn't seem to care about the outcome. This is the difference between the trailer and the one that we are hoping to create.

The trailer is set mostly in the depths of the forest and the establishing shot right at the beginning of this trailer is an upwards tilt from a birds eye view of the trees to show quite how vast the forest is. In all of the mid shots there is endless scenery emphasising their location. The trailer in itself is not edited as fast as others that I have seen but there isn't any points in the trailer that you feel it is dragging on. It manages to change between all the characters in the love triangle and the other effecting factors in the story enough to keep you interested. Although there are a lot of mid shots not all of them are static. For example 15 seonds in to the trailer the mid shot is captured while the camera is being lowered down in a particular direction. Another variation of mid shots is just after that at 18 seconds in where the camera seems to be moving backwards (zooming out). The final shot that I am going to talk about that caught my eye is a very slight low angle mid shot, 1:06 mins in, to show the dramatic jump from the character. The slow motion of the shot makes it, for me, the most powerful shot in the trailer beacuse it draws you in and you dont feel you can take your eyes off it!

Personally I feel that the one element that is done best in this trailer is the sound. The soundtrack is one that fits the somber mood that is set as the girl has to make such a hard decision; However at the same time it also brings tension. When the part comes where the bad character comes the sound stops and there is an eery quietness before the voice of the girl asks a question with a very nervous voice. The sound then picks up again with a much more up tempo rhythm that makes you very on edge as you think something drastic is brewing or is about to happen. This to me sound is a very crucial part of a trailer as it plays a huge role in setting the mood. What I think also helps to add to the dramatic mood is the music clash in the music when there is a sudden change of camera shot to a close up to emphasise the emotion on a character. For example this can be found at 1:11 mins in to the trailer.

There are some visual effects but the trailer is pretty basic in the sense that it uses music, acting and a powerful story line to keep people drawn in. However when the titles of when it is being released, the name of the film etc are played there is a very clever CGI of very, thick, black clouds moving quickly behind the titles that help again to create the dark mood. For example behind the release date, 58 seconds in.

"Going The Distance" trailer 1

The trailer above is of the newest release in 2010 called " Going the Distance" This movie has a good cast with the leading Actress Drew Barrymore and Justin Long playing the lead Male role. This romantic comedy will leave audiences laughing out loud. The trailer of Going the Distance incredibly entertaining as it reflects what the movie wants the audience to experience the funny side of the long distance relationships. The transitions between the scenes is a big boeing 747 jet going across the scene which again grabbed my attention because it made it clear to me about the distance of the relationships. The editing of the trailer was smooth and flowing to give the important and funny moments of the movie. The editing also includes a few split screens of the main characters name with a white background and the names in black. This signifies the comic aspect of the movie with a touch of romance. Also the story telling is done through a few titles that explain the story in detail in what there is to come next.

The cinematography side of the trailer is pretty simple which includes many shot reaction shots of people having conversations about there relationships. The angles that stick out are the mid range shots of the main characters sitting in the airport together hugging each other is a vital moment in the story line before the Girl leaves. There are also a few establishing shots of city's like San Fransico and New York. For the representation of this there is a split screen at one point of the trailer that shows the major land marks of these cities, for example the San Fransico Bridge and the New York Skyscrapers.

The sound added to the trailer was melodic romantic music. This gave the sense of love as it sooths the audience to be involved in the movie. At the end of the trailer we see a woman bitting into corn, the bit is enhanced to add to the comedy effect beacuse of the previous night of what happened. What we want to incorporate looking at this video is the transitions and the shot reaction shots. There is no voice over which we will be looking at to place in the video. But I liked the idea of the characters narrating the story for us. This gives the sense of the movie of what is in store for the Audience.

Genre Choice Inspiration

When choosing the genre for my movie trailer I thought about all the things that I had watched recently on television, whether it was TV or a film.

I had been watching a TV series that is based on a film called Friday Night Lights. It is about an school American Football team in Texas that the whole town base their lives around. The basic story line is that every Friday night everyone in the town goes to watch the team play in their stadium. Although it is a school team the stadium is able to hold tens of thousands of people and football is everything to them. The twists in relationships between the characters are incredibly deep and manage to grip you!

I am hoping to do something along the same lines as this in our project. So to conclude, the inspiration for the genre of the project came from Friday Night Lights which is a TV programme even though our project is a film trailer.

First Idea Of Trailer

Today in our media class, Gregor and I discussed the ideas of our new trailer. From switching ideas from Sports to Horror through to Action we decided to stick on to a Romantic Comedy/Drama genre for our trailer.
Our story goes a bit like this, One beautiful girl has a boy friend who is a rugby player in school, she secretly has an affair with a footballer player. The boys at first hate each other for they have done to her, but eventually become friends and gang up on the girl and playing pranks on her and try and make her life terrible in school. These events lead to many comic things happening around campus.
This idea is not particularly based on a movie, but we will add many trailers of different movies to highlight what we want.
